Sea World!

Sunday Joy and I spent the day at Sea World.

We had never been to Sea World before, so we thought it would fun to do something like that for the first time together at some point. So, for Joy’s birthday I got year-long passes to Sea World. I had been trying to get her to go to amusement parks with me for basically the last five years, but she’s not into them at all. She doesn’t like rollercoasters, standing in lines, etc.

So, I came up with the idea of Sea World as something of a comprimise, because Joy loves zoos. She loves looking at fish (and has always had fish in her aquariums since I first met her.) I heard that Sea World was like Busch Gardens for marine life. It turned out to be true. Joy loved going to Sea World.

I liked our trip too. Joy had fun. She loved going to all the different shows, because she likes watching gymnasts, dancers, acrobats, and people who are skilled at things like that. She also liked seeing people ride on the noses of dolphins, and perform stunts of all sorts. I liked seeing those things too, but I was probably a little more into the Beer School “show” that we visited. We both got to try a number of different beers that Anheusier-Busch produces. I love going to see factories and hearing how everything works, and ‘free’ samples are always welcome too.

Then there was the Kraken. This is a really decent ride. It is pretty short, but intense. The thing I like about it is the short wait. I knew Joy wasn’t going to go with me on the ride so I found an aquarium to plug her into for a good 30-45 minutes expecting a long line at this ride. It turned out to only be a 7-8 minute wait. I think this is because people don’t generally go to Sea World for rides. There are only five rides max, and I can only think of three right off hand.

I also really wanted to see the fireworks show, but Joy and I were so tired at the end of the night that we ended up going home early. We have a year-long pass, and the park is closer to where I live than my job is so I figured we could easily go back anytime. With that in mind we decided not to go, see, and do everything on the first day. There was a really awesome restaurant in the park that we are going to come back to some night just for a date night. There is a water ride that will get us soaked that we’ll see again. There’s the fireworks show. OK, this will be a long list. There is still a lot for us to do there.

Joy was pretty excited about getting yearlong passes, because we had this idea of using one of the passes to take our friends to the park with us. Joy thought it would be fun to take Jenn back at some point or to let me go with Mike or Nate or whoever… y’never know. Unfortunately, that’s not going to work out for us. Sea World doesn’t ID or anything, but they do scan your hand to ID you. So, that was a let down.

We had a lot of fun at Sea World and we learned a thing or two about going to amusement parks. We were glad we brought our own water and food for the day. We could have come to the park during different hours though. Timing is everything, and when you’ve got a whole year to get it all in you don’t necessarily need to go first thing in the morning.

  1. Free samples…and of beer for that matter…blasted hand identification system!

  2. Anytime after Labor Day Sea World will be a ghost town: it’s a great time of year to go while it’s still hot outside (so you don’t mind getting soaked), but when the park is empty. You might also get into Busch Gardens for a reduced rate (which will also be dead after Labor Day).

As for the hand scanning thing: from my experience, it doesn’t actually work too well (if it’s similar to the ones at Disney). My brother and I have swapped tickets before and the hand scanners didn’t notice. It might be different for season passes though, I dunno.
